Why Apprenticeships Matter in Hospitality and Catering

National Apprenticeship Week is an important opportunity to reflect on the role apprenticeships continue to play in hospitality and catering, and why they are vital to the long-term success of our sector.

Across the United Kingdom, skills shortages remain a significant challenge. Kitchens, front of house teams, and operational roles are all feeling the pressure. This goes beyond short-term recruitment issues. It is about creating a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals who understand the standards, pace and expectations of the hospitality industry.

Addressing skills gaps and supporting the workforce

Hospitality and catering have always been industries built on practical experience. Apprenticeships combine hands-on learning with structured training, allowing individuals to develop real-world skills while earning and progressing. For employers, this means developing people who are trained specifically for their business and operational needs.

At the same time, the number of young people not in education, employment or training remains a concern across the UK. Apprenticeships offer a clear route into employment, providing practical skills, confidence and transferable experience such as teamwork, communication and responsibility.

A credible alternative to the traditional university route

Hospitality and catering offer more than just a first job. They offer long-term careers. Apprenticeships show that success is not limited to the traditional university pathway. Many people build rewarding careers through practical learning, professional development and clear progression routes within the industry.

From entry-level roles through to senior leadership positions, apprenticeships support development at every stage of a career. This structure is key to retaining talent. When individuals can see a clear future, whether that is technical progression, management responsibility or leadership roles, they are far more likely to stay within the sector.

Building future talent through apprenticeships

Through Umbrella Employ, hospitality and catering businesses can access a strong pipeline of people who are keen to begin or develop their careers in the sector. Apprenticeships provide the framework that supports learners while allowing employers to shape and develop their future workforce.

On a personal level, apprenticeships have played an important role in my own career development. I have completed two apprenticeships within the industry, including the Operations Manager Level 5 qualification, and I am currently undertaking the Level 7 Senior Leadership apprenticeship. This experience has reinforced that apprenticeships are not just for those starting out. They support continuous professional development at every stage of a career.

Strengthening the future of hospitality and catering

Hospitality and catering have helped countless individuals build sustainable, long-term careers. They have provided first opportunities, career changes and clear leadership pathways. Apprenticeships remain central to that story.

As we recognise National Apprenticeship Week, it is worth considering how we continue to engage the next generation, support those seeking opportunity and strengthen the future of our industry through structured training and development.
