Business Case Study - Q&A with People & Culture Director Shannon Rockey of Lime Wood Group

We asked Shannon Rockey of Lime Wood Group why she chose apprenticeships to train both new and existing staff at Lime Wood.

What was the main reason for choosing Umbrella Training as your training and apprenticeship provider?

The fact the apprenticeship is funded by the levy. This is both a financial and practical benefit to the business. We chose Umbrella because they are hospitality specific. Our profession has different needs and challenges and it’s essential to have a provider that understands this.  It also comes down to personality. Umbrella is a good fit for us. In terms of brand and people we believe in the same things.

How easy was it to set up and manage your apprenticeship programme?

It was easy. We sent Umbrella Training the names of the staff members we wanted to enrol, and they signed them up. They then helped and guided us through the gov.uk and BUD sites which was necessary for our staff to maximise time in their busy lives.

How have your apprentice(s) helped your business?

Our apprentices are the stalwart team in some depts, highly promoted in others and by showing that we are continuing to invest in their career development as well as their professional skills makes them keen to stay and progress with us. That's loyalty.

Think about the biggest challenge working with your apprentice(s) and how did you overcome it?

There are 2 big challenges.

  1. The work/study time split. Umbrella Training is supportive and flexible as they understand that time is a challenge, especially within the hospitality industry. They get that things can change quickly with us, but always make sure the apprentice has the time they need to complete their apprenticeship while supporting them and the business needs.

  2. The mindset of the Apprentice learner.  Education is free and mandatory to 18.  For a first-job apprentice there is a need to understand.  You may be an employer, but until they develop their ‘employee’ mindset they won’t appreciate the sheer privilege of being an Apprentice.  They are learning to be the best, from the best. As the employer you have to engage with them and be in the head of every learner, they must have many mentors around  to help them grow.

What successes have you had with your apprentice(s) and how have you celebrated it?

We are delighted that one of our apprentices was recognised at the Purple Umbrella Awards 2023 held at BAFTA 195. Russell Johnson won Best Level 3 Apprentice and we could not be more proud of him!  He has had sooooo many treats!

How satisfied are you with the tailored and mindful apprenticeship programmes developed by Umbrella Training?

Very. They match our apprentices to the correct standard required to get them the best outcomes possible and tailor that standard to match our organisation's values and goals. We have been able to reorganise the delivery, rename our own models and teach the curriculum ourselves based on what we already do, and what we want them to know.

How likely are you to continue working with Umbrella Training in the future? Would you recommend Umbrella Training to other hospitality businesses?

Yes, and I already have. It's the people, there is always a great connection with Lime Wood people and Umbrella people!
