Can I do an apprenticeship without GCSEs?
The short answer: Yes.
Apprenticeships are a fantastic alternative to traditional full-time study, and you can start one even if you don’t have GCSEs. #
Whether you're a school leaver or changing careers, apprenticeships give you the chance to:
Gain hands-on experience in a real job
Earn a salary while you learn
Work towards nationally recognised qualifications
Best of all? Many opportunities don’t require GCSEs to get started.
What Is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a structured training programme that combines:
Practical work experience
Formal learning and qualifications
As an apprentice, you’ll be employed from day one. You’ll learn technical skills for your industry and soft skills like teamwork, communication, and time management. You'll also receive:
A salary
Holiday pay
Ongoing support from a training provider

What Are the Entry Requirements For Apprenticeships?
One of the biggest benefits of apprenticeships is their accessibility.
Apprenticeships Without GCSEs
Many intermediate apprenticeships (Level 2) don’t require GCSEs. These typically:
Last between 12–24 months
Lead to qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2 or a BTEC
Most employers are looking for commitment, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn, not just academic achievements.
Are Functional Skills Still Required for Apprenticeships in the UK?
What Are Functional Skills?
Functional Skills are qualifications in English and maths that help you build essential knowledge for both the workplace and everyday life. They’re designed for learners who didn’t achieve a GCSE grade 4/C or above.
Do You Still Need Them?
The rules have recently changed:
Aged 16–18: You’ll still be required to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths, unless you’ve already achieved the equivalent GCSEs.
Aged 19+: You may no longer be required to complete Functional Skills, depending on your apprenticeship programme and your current skill level. Your training provider will assess your needs individually.

How to apply for an apprentice without GCSE's
To apply for an apprenticeship you'll need a CV and cover letter. There are great tips on the National Careers website. Should your application be unsuccessful, don't let it discourage you. Rejection is a normal aspect of the apprenticeship or job application journey and is something encountered by many. It might require multiple attempts before discovering the ideal match for you. If you have made it to the next round, it will most likely be an interview.

The notion that apprenticeships are reserved for those with academic qualifications is debunked by the reality of inclusivity within these programs. Whether you're a recent school leaver or seeking a career change, apprenticeships offer a pathway to professional growth and success, regardless of your GCSE background
